Estevan is known for its strong sense of community, and that is largely thanks to the dedication of its volunteers. As National Volunteer Week continues until May 4, residents and organizations are taking the opportunity to recognize the countless individuals who give their time and effort to support local events and initiatives.
Long-time Rotary member Jeff Ward highlighted the vital role volunteers play in the community, stating, "A community can really be illustrated by the volunteer groups that they have." He noted that Estevan boasts a variety of groups, including the Rotary Club, Kinsmen, Lions, Elks, and United Way, all of which contribute to the success of local events such as curling tournaments and summer games.
Ward emphasized that National Volunteer Week is a chance to celebrate the hard work of volunteers and the impact they have on making things happen in Estevan. "It’s just great that there’s a week that recognizes those volunteers," he said, pointing out how local volunteer organizations are consistently at the forefront of ensuring events and programs thrive in the community.
As city manager, Ward often witnesses firsthand the efforts of volunteer groups.
With the help of volunteers, Estevan continues to be a dynamic place where residents come together to support one another. Looking ahead, Ward is optimistic about the future, saying, "I think we’re going to continue to see that. I just really appreciate everyone who volunteers their time."
Councillor Dave Elliot, who has served as part of the Estevan Kinsmen, echoed the sentiment, saying that regardless of interests, there is a group to get involved in. "Once you say yes, you kind of forget how to say no." He added that no events, from sports to arts and culture, can be done without support from the volunteer community.
National Volunteer Week serves as a reminder of the importance of volunteerism in building a strong and vibrant community. As the week continues, Estevan residents are encouraged to reflect on the ways volunteers have made a difference in their lives and to show gratitude to those who give their time so selflessly.
As Elliot said, "Get off the couch, there’s nothing that good on Netflix."
