On April 11, Winkler police responded to a report of a vehicle that struck a child riding a bicycle at the intersection of Gemstone Drive and 15th Street.
According to police, the driver rolled through a stop sign and made contact with the child, who was on his way to school. The impact caused the child to fall from his bike, resulting in a minor injury.
The driver stopped and spoke to the child but then left the scene without providing any personal or insurance information. Officers later located the driver, who was issued a fine under the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act for failing to give required information to a person injured in the accident.
Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt emphasized the importance of exchanging information in these situations:
“Anytime you make contact with somebody, whether it be another vehicle or somebody on a bicycle, even if you think there's no damage or injuries, it's important to leave information. The fine for not leaving information is $298, and that's under the Highway Traffic Act of Manitoba.”
