The RCMP are giving out some tips to keep grain safe following a theft that was reported in Saskatchewan earlier this spring.

On April 12, 2025, Coronach RCMP received a report of a theft at a rural property near Ogema. After an investigation, police found that 5,000 bushels of grain were stolen from bulk storage bins located on the property. The exact time and date of the incident are unknown, though likely between spring of 2024 and April 2025.

While the investigation continues, the RCMP is giving out tips to other producers on how to avoid grain theft in the future:

  • Use grain confetti: Grain confetti consists of tiny p[pieces of paper which have a unique identification number. By mixing those in with grain, it can deter thieves and link back to the proper owners in the event of a theft.
  • Keep your items visible: Grain bin sites should be chosen carefully, placed in sites where frequent monitoring can happen. The same should be practiced with any additional produce, livestock, or equipment on your property. Alternatively, producers should store those in areas that are well-lit and out of sight from main roads.
  • Turn off unloading systems: Any electrical unloading systems should be turned off at the end of the workday.
  • Install cameras: A monitored security or alarm system can be installed if you have cellular or internet coverage. Any systems without an infrared camera should have proper nighttime lighting for your cameras. Motion-detection cameras, such as trail cameras, can also be a good choice for securing your property.
  • Light your property: Installing motion-sensor security lights or timer lights that turn on at sundown can help to discourage trespassers or thieves.
  • Keep stock of your property:  An inventory of items on your property can help keep them safe. Making note of the quantity of stored grain along with livestock can inform producers if there are changes. Makes, serial numbers, and models of equipment can help identify them if stolen. Producers should keep an eye on their properties over the winter and after extended leaves to check in on them.
  • Limit access to your property: Producers should keep access to their areas limited so it's more apparent when an unauthorized vehicle enters their sites.
  • Lock up: Securely lock your home, businesses, outbuildings, and slip tanks. Grain bins can hold bolt-cutter resistant locks to help deter thieves. Producers should regularly check their locks to make sure they haven't been damaged or swapped out.

The RCMP reminds producers to keep an eye out for any thieves and to call their local detachment in case of a theft or other emergency.
