A 20-year-old man from Winkler was arrested after having a run-in with police twice in the span of 15 minutes, culminating in a pursuit and multiple charges.

The incident began around 8:40 p.m. when Winkler police pulled the vehicle over for a traffic violation.

“Officers had stopped the vehicle. The windows were tinted too dark and issued a ticket for that,” said Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt.

Just minutes later, police observed the same vehicle accelerating loudly and speeding southbound on Main Street. Officers attempted a second traffic stop, but the driver fled.

“The vehicle attempted to evade police with an attempt to get away,” Chief Hunt explained. “Officers were able to follow them and locate them at an address at the south end of town.”

The pursuit ended when the driver parked at the driveway of an unrelated residence. He was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect now faces charges of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Flight from a Peace Officer. He was issued a Serious Offence Notice from Manitoba Public Insurance and released on an Appearance Notice, and the vehicle has been seized.

“The weather’s warming up, there’s definitely more traffic... Drive safe out there, we don’t want accidents.”
