A traffic stop took a turn earlier this month when a driver sped past officers, yelling and revving his engine — behaviour that eventually led to a roadside prohibition, several fines, and the seizure of his vehicle.
Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt said officers were pulled over with an unrelated vehicle on April 19 when the incident occurred.
“The driver of this other vehicle here drove past them, yelled loudly at the officers, and revved the engine while he sped away, kind of squealing his tires in the process,” Hunt said. “So officers completed their traffic stop that they were currently on and then encountered this vehicle again shortly after and pulled him over.”
The driver showed signs of impairment, Hunt said, and failed a roadside breath test. He was immediately issued a 90-day driving suspension and a $700 fine under Manitoba’s Immediate Roadside Prohibition program.
Police also found liquor and unmarked tobacco in the vehicle. The driver received an additional $237 fine for carrying liquor and a $2,542 fine for possessing unmarked tobacco.
His vehicle was seized for 30 days.
