The RCMP are investigating a case of grain theft that happened near Ogema.

The report was made to the RCMP on April 12th and is suspected to have happened sometime between the spring of 2024 and April 2025. The investigation has determined someone stole roughly 5,000 bushels of grain from bulk storage bins on the property. The volume of grain would be enough to fill roughly 1.5 rail hoppers.

The RCMP is advising producers to take some preventative steps to secure grain and property. They suggest using grain confetti, which are tiny pieces of paper with an identification number that can link the grain to its owner. Also, place bins in an area where they can be monitored. This is recommended for any produce, livestock, or equipment on the property. If that isn’t possible, it is recommended to store items in well-lit areas.

At the end of the day, the RCMP also recommend turning off any electrical loading systems at the bins and installing security systems on the property if there is cellular or internet coverage. As well, if using cameras, ensure the area is well lit, unless it is an infrared camera.

Limit access to the property so that it is obvious whenever anyone is going to or from the grain storage site, and keep stock of the property by doing an inventory of the products and equipment. As well, check on the storage site throughout the winter, and immediately before and after periods of extended leave.

Anyone with information about the theft of grain from the Ogema area is asked to contact police by calling 310-RCMP, or by contacting Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477 (TIPS).
