April is the month to watch out for when it comes to spring, with warming temperatures and plenty of rainfall to ring in the warmer season. Estevan had both of those back in April, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada's data.
Meteorologist Stephen Berg details how the springtime temperatures rolled out over the Estevan area.
"Estevan was approximately normal, just a half a degree above it looks like. It was about 5 degrees for the monthly mean temperature, and normal is about 4.5 degrees. So 0.4 degrees above normal for the Estevan area, and Regina is largely the same, so very close, but marginally above the normal."
Rainfall is one of the most important parts of April, as farmers are hoping for a shot of moisture before their seeding season begins.
Berg says the Estevan area had more than enough to get by for the month.
"Estevan had 37.5 millimetres of estimated precipitation, which is about 10 millimetres above normal, so a little bit wetter than normal. Regina, though, was just shy of 10 millimetres, and their normal is 27 millimetres, so that's a little bit of a departure on the dry side, so I guess a couple of systems might have gone through Estevan, but not through Regina."
One of the big systems that set Regina apart was a rain and snow storm which deposited moisture across the southeast, including up to 32 centimetres of snow in some areas.
While Berg says they don't have the exact amounts for the more northern areas of the southeast, they were likely well served by the snow they got.
"We don't have sort of a climate record here for Moosomin, but certainly that 30 to 40 centimeter snowfall that they got towards the end of the month certainly would have hiked that number quite high, so they might have been somewhere in the range of 50 millimeters or so for the month, kind of interpolating between Regina and Estevan's numbers."
Berg reminds people to enjoy the warmer weather that we're seeing arrive as of this weekend.
