Diamond Valley Fire Rescue is raising awareness about the importance of being prepared for anything through a series of workshops for Emergency Preparedness Week.

“It's a week that we try to really hone in on public engagement and education pieces to give everybody the tools they need to be successful in the case of wildfire, flood, or a pandemic,” said Logan Sabourin, Diamond Valley Deputy Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management.

Workshops kick off on May 6 at 6:30 p.m., with a FireSmart initiative on how to protect your property from wildfire, and considerations to take to mitigate the risk of a fire encroaching on your property.

On May 7 at 6 p.m., an Alberta emergency management agency team member from Be Prepared will go through 72-hour kits and emergency planning, including evacuation routes, communication, and planning within your household.

Lastly, on May 8 at 6:30 p.m., a representative from Go Insurance will discuss how to protect property and belongings following a disaster and how to go through the claims process.

Sabourin is hopeful that the workshops will give residents peace of mind that their loved ones, property, and livelihoods are protected, and feel prepared for when an emergency does happen.

“It's not so much about fear-mongering,” Sabourin said. “It's about giving people the confidence that they can mitigate some of the worst of it in advance before the event ever happens.”

The workshops will be held at the Sheep River Library.
