A state of emergency has been declared in Peguis First Nation as a grass fire burns through the community.

The fire broke out just before 5 p.m. and has continued to spread as strong winds push the fire throughout the First Nation located 190 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

The blaze has already destroyed a few homes and is threatening many others.

"Grand Chief Kyra Wilson and the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs sends our thoughts and prayers to Chief Stan Bird and the people of Peguis First Nation, and Chief Kurvis Anderson and the community of Pinaymootang First Nation, as they face dangerous forest fires, which have already destroyed some homes," said the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs in a post on Facebook.

"We stand with you and pray for the safety of your families, leadership, and all those protecting the land."

Water Bombers and firefighters are working tirelessly to put out the fire.

According to Peguis First Nation's Facebook page, several community members have been evacuated. The community hall has been set up for evacuees.

The cause of the fire is unknown.
