Albertans can expect to hear a provincewide emergency alert test at 1:55 p.m. MDT on Wednesday, May 7. The test will be broadcast on television, radio, and compatible wireless devices across the province.

The alert will begin with the recognizable Canadian Alert Attention Signal, followed by a message confirming that it is only a test and no action is required.

The test is part of the national Alert Ready system and is being coordinated by Alberta’s emergency management organization to coincide with Emergency Preparedness Week, which runs from May 4 to 10. This year’s theme is “Be prepared. Know your risks.”

While the alert will be sent to as many devices as possible, not all mobile users may receive it. Factors like device compatibility, connection to LTE or 5G networks, signal strength, and settings can affect delivery.

Canadians cannot opt out of these alerts, whether they are tests or actual emergencies. The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) requires at least one test per year, though participation by provinces is voluntary. Quebec has opted out of this round.

Emergency Preparedness Week is an annual event led by Public Safety Canada in collaboration with provinces, territories, and other partners. Albertans are encouraged to stay informed, understand their local risks, create a family emergency plan, build an emergency kit, and connect with their communities.

The Alert Ready test helps ensure the system works properly and raises awareness about how emergency alerts are delivered during real crises.
