All three ensembles of the Cochrane Music Society are tuning up for their annual Spring Showcase Concert, set for Saturday, May 10 at 7 p.m. at the Cochrane Alliance Church.
Choral Waves will explore the theme of shared human experience—this “complicated, yet wonderful life together”—with a program ranging from classical selections to songs by Gordon Lightfoot and Harry Belafonte. Central to the set is Turn the World Around, a musical reminder of the power of community.
A highlight this year: Choral Waves will premiere Together, an original piece commissioned from Calgary composer Oliver Munar with lyrics by soprano Ruth Ullyatt, one of the choir’s own.
The Riverside Jazz and Band on the Bow ensembles will dive into stories that shape identity and reveal truth. Riverside Jazz swings through iconic charts like Chick Corea’s Spain, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s The Girl from Ipanema and Elton John’s I’m Still Standing.
Band on the Bow takes audiences on a musical journey that spans almost 100 years of love, gratitude and place—from the 1876 Czech opera Hubička (The Kiss) to the Beatles, and from Variations on a Plum Blossom Theme to Grace Before Sleep by American composer Susan LaBarr. The band also pays tribute to the West Coast with Robert Buckley’s Cascadia Suite.
The Cochrane Music Society loves playing for its hometown crowd. Don’t miss this vibrant evening of music! Tickets are available at the door or online at www.cochranemusic.ca.
Remember to bring a nonperishable donation for the Cochrane Food Bank.
