As the change in season reels in the heat, it's hooking anglers along with it.

"(It's) being out on the water, just the peace and quiet of it. I mean catching fish is great, it's fantastic. But at the end of the day it's, and I think it's for a lot of fishermen, the quietness of being on the water," says Trevor Fehr of Fehr's Sporting Goods in Steinbach.

He says while there's plenty of fish that can be caught through the year, the seasons for others still need to open.

"Walleye season will open on May 10. But if you want to go bass fishing, cat fishing, pike, or anything like that, that, it's open right now," Fehr says.

There are also some great spots that are open for casting a line, he says.

"Lake of the Woods, I hear, is open. That's always been the favourite around here. In the Whiteshell, some lakes are open, some aren't. Some still have ice on them, and we kind of stay away from that," he says.

"The Red River is wide open—a lot of people are going catfishing already. Actually, we had a customer, and yesterday he said he caught five in an hour."

Fehr says personally, he just heads for open water sink a hook.

For those that are just getting into the sport, he says they don't need to break the bank to get what they need and that $150 can go a long way.

"You can get a rod, reel, all your tackle, tackle box, and everything nicely set up," he lists, and recommends coming into Fehr's Sporting Goods for some advice.

"We know where the fish are going to be right now, we have all that knowledge condensed already."
