Creighton Lodge is one of several sites across the city set to receive help during the Estevan United Way’s Day of Caring, a long-running event that sees volunteers step up for yard work, painting, and other home maintenance tasks—often for seniors or those facing mobility challenges.
Shelly Veroba is on the board of the United Way and Co-Chair of the Day of Caring Committee., but her connection started through her work with the Creighton Lodge Trust.
“I came on the board because Creighton Lodge Trust is a member agency,” she said. “So I decided that if the United Way was going to be so good to Creighton Lodge, then I could give back and join the board.”
It’s work that matters deeply to those receiving help.
“You can come, and if you want to do some heavy lifting, we have a lot of opportunity for yard work. We have some painting, and there’s also some skilled labour needed sometimes,” said Veroba. “And so we've had a wide variety of different people, different organizations, businesses, and individuals sign up. We will welcome everyone.”
She said it’s not just about the work—it’s about the people.
“When you get to one of those locations and you see the smile on their face and feel the appreciation that is felt after a job is done—and honestly, they appreciate you just when you ring the doorbell and show up,” said Veroba. “They just thank you so much for coming.”
Requests for assistance are also being accepted.
“Some people don’t reach out and ask for help because they feel like they don’t deserve it, they don’t really need it. But honestly, if you even have an inkling that you need help, please get a hold of us at United Way Estevan,” she said. “That’s what we’re here for—we want to help you.”
