The South Central Regional Library is celebrating 60 years in style.

The network of libraries, which includes Winkler, Morden, Altona, Miami, and Manitou, is holding a grand raffle that will go toward sustaining the important community resource.

The raffle pairs helping the important organization and the opportunity to win memorable prize packages.

“It’s exciting,” says Heidi Friesen, the marketing manager for the raffle project.

“The grand prize is a Via Rail voucher so that you can travel. It's $2000, and then you get $1000 cash.”

The grand prize also includes luggage for the winner.

What else can you win?

Beyond the grand prize, there are also large packages at stake that will appeal to every interest, including:

  • 2nd Prize (Backyard and Beyond) Worth Approx. $2000:
-STIHL Chainsaw, Weed Whipper and Hand Vacuum
    -Weber "Smokey Joe" Grill
    -Double Seater Gravity Chair
    -$100 Co-op Gift Card
    -$100 Liquor Mart Gift Card

  • 3rd Prize (Fun and Games) Worth Approx. $1000:
-Blue Bombers Ticket and Swag Package
    -Fishing Gear
-Gift Card to Miami Golf Course
    -$75 Boston Pizza Gift Card
    -Games

  • 4th Prize (Treat Yourself) Worth Approx. $750:
    -$300 Thermea Gift Card
    -$200 Appelt's Gift Card
    -Wine Basket
    -Bath & Body Basket

Where will the funds go?

Friesen says that the funds from the raffle will go to various projects at each of the library branches. Each one has decided on a unique addition that will enhance its facility for the community:

  • Winkler: a new coffee corner

  • Morden: a renovated meeting room

  • Altona: an extended desk

  • Manitou: updated furniture

  • Miami: shared green space

Another reason to buy tickets is to get into the spirit of friendly competition. Friesen says that the branches are competing to determine who can sell the most raffle tickets.

Currently, Morden is in the lead.

So much more than books

In the end, participating in SCRL’s unique raffle is a chance to support an organization and service that enriches the community in many ways.

“We are so much more than just coming to get books. We have so much programming now that I don't think existed when I was a kid,” says Friesen. “We actually build a lot of community now with our programs.”

SCRL branches also act as a community bridge to make games, DVDs, audiobooks, and puzzles accessible to everyone.

Other stories:

It amounts to a lot.

“The kind of things that we offer is just growing, and it's very cool,” says Friesen. “Before I came to work at the library, I didn't know they were doing all of this stuff, but I was very pleasantly surprised, and now I get to help make some of it.”

May 16 is the last day to purchase tickets to SCRL’s raffle. The ticket prices are 1 for $20, 3 for $50, or 10 for $100.

Friesen says there are approximately 4,000 tickets left.
