Cochrane RCMP say mental health and impaired driving were notable concerns in the community during April, as the detachment responded to 476 calls for service throughout the month.
With Mental Health Week underway (May 5–9), Inspector Dave Brunner highlighted the growing number of calls related to mental health issues, including 24 well-being checks and 17 calls specifically categorized as mental health concerns.
“Unfortunately, two of those involved missing persons,” Brunner said noting the critical role Cochrane Search and Rescue played in helping locate those individuals.
“We’re seeing that people in distress tend to feel very much alone. They may wander off, stop taking care of themselves, it’s a serious concern.”
Brunner said the rise in mental health-related calls reflects broader societal challenges. “We live in the most connected time in history, yet we’re seeing increases in suicide, addiction, and mental health issues. It’s clear people are suffering,” he said.
He urged community members to reach out for help. “Talk to someone, family, friends, your doctor, or community mental health clinics. There’s support out there, and the police are here to help too.”

In addition to mental health, impaired driving cases were also on the rise, with four impaired drivers charged in April.
“That’s a bit of an uptick,” said Brunner. “The warmer weather brings people out to socialize more, but if you’re heading to the patio, make a plan to get home safe. It’s not worth the risk.”
Cochrane RCMP also dealt with 16 reports of fraud in April, which Brunner says is a reminder that “fraud season” is in full swing.
“From CRA scams to fake police calls asking for money, we’re seeing all the classics,” he said. “If someone calls asking for your banking information or threatens arrest, hang up. We don’t operate like that.”
RCMP encourage anyone affected by fraud or mental health concerns to contact local support services or the detachment directly.
