The Town of Innisfail has added a new little library to its collection.

A dog stick library is now available at the off-leash dog park in the northeast portion of Centennial Park.

At the end of April, the dog stick library was installed so that dog owners can place sticks and toys to be shared with other dogs that come to the park.

Ken Kowalchuk, Manager of Communications and Marketing at the Town of Innisfail, says it was an idea brought forward by a staff member who saw a similar idea online, and the town decided it would be fun to create.

“Over the winter, the park staff had a little bit of time and used some reclaimed wood from within the organization and prepared the stick library,” says Kowalchuk.

“Our parks department every year, they do take on a sort of special project each winter. Over the past few years, they’ve built miniature replica grain elevators for some of the watering stations in town that they use for flower beds and whatnot, so this is really a continuation of those initiatives.”

The dog stick library seems to be popular, with sticks and toys already left and ready for the next dogs to play with, and the town has received a lot of positive reaction through its social media.

“We have a group in town, they actually create quite elaborate little libraries at various locations around town where people can put books or actually take books, so it’s kind of a book exchange program, so this was kind of a sort of a tongue-in-cheek nod to those people,” comments Kowalchuk on the newest library addition.

Little libraries have been a popular item in many communities, but Innisfail may be starting a new trend with the dog stick library.
