The Town of Alix is adding members to its fire department team, and whether you are experienced or not, they are willing to provide training.
Fire Chief Corrie Anderson says they are looking for people who are physically fit and have no back injuries, and who are able to lift and carry at least 50 pounds.
“Once you get dressed, just the bunker gear alone you're probably at 40 pounds,” states Anderson.
You don’t need to be a poster child of fitness, Anderson says, but being able to wear the weight and carry the weight is a necessity of the job.
Applicants also need to be mentally fit, since the Alix Fire Department does get called out to accidents as first responders.
“The fire is not the hard part. It's always the injury side,” says Anderson about the role.
Interested applicants can stop by on the first three Thursdays of the month at the fire hall, where they practice and train.
Applicants can pick up a hiring package or just come and chat about the role.
There is no charge for the training, which is provided in-house and through provincially and nationally approved courses.
Training is delivered virtually, in-class and on the job.
Residents who want to become firefighters must be 18 years of age to volunteer.
