Southeast Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate in April fell to its lowest point since November 2024, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada. The Labour Force Survey results released Friday morning show the unemployment rate for the Regina-Moose Mountain Economic Region, which includes Weyburn and Estevan, was 5.1 per cent. This was a drop from 5.5 per cent in March, and down substantially from April 2024, when the unemployment rate was 6.8 per cent.

The decline comes as most regions in Saskatchewan saw lower unemployment rates in April, bucking the national trend. Nationally, employment levels remained largely unchanged, and the unemployment rate rose to 6.9 per cent. Meanwhile, Saskatchewan went from 4.9 to 4.3, the lowest of all the provinces.

The Regina-Moose Mountain Economic Region’s unemployment rate coincided with 2,600 more people working in the region in April compared to March, and 7,900 more people working year over year. A month-to-month population increase of 600 also contributed to a higher labour force participation rate.

Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey is released once a month and measures the current state of the Canadian labour market.
