The city of Estevan commemorated the efforts of a former Mayor by renaming a local park. Churchill Park is now known as the Roy Ludwig Churchill Park, recognizing the career and efforts of Ludwig as he served as a city councillor for 18 years and as mayor for 12.

He was introduced by the current mayor, Tony Sernick, who said that Ludwig's efforts earned him the spot.

"Your contributions to our community have went above and beyond. And that's why today you will be immortalized in history forever."

Ludwig talked a bit about all of the people who helped him through all of those years.

"I'd like to thank all of the councillors that I had the privilege to work with over 30 years. That was an amazing experience. You guys taught me so much and I hope it was somewhat reciprocated. I really enjoyed that. I'd like to thank the present council for giving me this honour, much appreciated. I'd like to thank my good wife and family for putting up with me for all of the meetings that I missed events at home."

A lot of work went into Churchill Park over Ludwig's time in office, with improvements for the pool and play structure being put in place.

Ludwig says he's confident the new city council and mayor will keep the park in great condition.

I'm sure they'll look after it. As they do all their parks, they do a very good job of that. So I have confidence they'll continue to look after it. It's such a great investment for the young people in our community. When people move to a community, they look at not only the sports, but also the parks and how they're kept up and what they look like. So that's part of any city, any growing city. So I'm sure it'll be kept up."

Since he retired in the fall of 2024, Ludwig says he's been focusing on a new venture.

"I'm enjoying retirement. I have a job with the Liquor Commission. I'm chairman on the Saskatchewan Liquor Commission, which I find very interesting and rewarding work. We only meet two to three days a month. So it's a lot less onerous than my previous duties. So, yeah, I'm enjoying that"

The announcement for the renaming of Churchill Park saw current and former councillors, as well as members of Ludwig's family, attend the event.
