Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning Sunday afternoon for parts of Rocky View County near Airdrie and Crossfield, with up to 80 millimetres of precipitation expected by Tuesday morning.

Rain is forecast to begin Sunday night and intensify through the day on Monday before tapering off early Tuesday. The warning states that rainfall totals between 50 and 80 mm are possible. Wet snow may mix in Monday morning and evening as snow levels fall below 2,000 metres.

The agency warns that heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding, water pooling on roads, and localized flooding in low-lying areas. Winter conditions may develop at higher elevations, and washouts are possible near rivers, creeks and culverts.

Sunday night’s forecast calls for cloudy skies with a 30 per cent chance of showers. Rain is expected to begin before morning, with a low of 6 C.

Heavy rain at times will continue Monday, with 20 to 30 mm expected. Winds will become northerly at 20 km/h, gusting to 40 in the afternoon. The forecast high is 8 C. The UV index will be 1, or low.

Rain will continue into Monday night, with a further 10 to 20 mm expected. Winds from the north at 20 km/h, gusting to 40, will become light later in the evening. The overnight low is forecast at 5 C.

Conditions are expected to improve on Tuesday, with sunny skies and a high of 16 C. Clear weather is forecast for Tuesday night with a low of zero.

Wednesday’s outlook includes a mix of sun and cloud with a 60 per cent chance of showers and a high of 16 C. Overnight, cloudy periods and a 60 per cent chance of showers are forecast, with a low of 1 C.
