According to Environment and Climate Change Canada (EC), many towns and cities across southern Manitoba broke heat records.
With temperatures shared Monday morning from EC, the following places hit a new high temperature for May 11.
- Altona broke its previous record of 30.6 back in 1977, after hitting 36.7
- Emerson broke its previous record of 30.9 back in 2024, after hitting 37.8
- Melita broke its former record of 32.2 back in 1940, after hitting 33.7
- Portage la Prairie broke its previous record of 31 back in 1977, after hitting 31.2
- Sprague broke its former record of 29.4 back in 1977, after hitting 34.4
- Steinbach broke its previous record of 30.6 back in 1977, after hitting 33.1
"We did break record temperatures in southern Manitoba, but not Winnipeg," said Natalie Hasell, a meteorologist with EC. "We've been in heat here over the past several days in southern Manitoba, and it's associated with an upper ridge characterized by the hot air in the southern states."
There continues to be a heat warning in effect for the city of Winnipeg and the surrounding areas and is expected to last until Wednesday, May 14, at the earliest.
