Southeast Advocates will be hosting the third International Potluck event this Saturday, May 17th from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Community Church.
Settlement Advisor Helen Crocombe said all are welcome, whether they are newcomers or lifelong Canadians.
"Come and meet us all, come and show your face, come and socialize, and just enjoy the good food, lots of different flavours, lots of different dishes. There's lots of culinary delights from different countries."
While anyone is welcome to bring their specialty dish, bringing food is not a requirement to attend this free event, which is all about meeting new people.
"Some of our newcomers don't socialize, so it's nice for them to connect with others," she shared. "[Pastor] Doug [Loden] is very hospitable and helps us out there and helps us organize. We like to keep things going and they're usually very well attended.
However, for those who do like cooking, food is the ultimate ice-breaker.
"It's really nice to let other people enjoy your cooking," she noted. "It makes you feel really proud that you can actually say, 'well, I made that and it's this is my specialty dish and please try it, I hope you enjoy it'. It makes you feel like you've done something for somebody, and people appreciate that."
Whether it's your first time or you've been to the previous two potlucks, Crocombe added it's open to the whole family.
"Bring the kids come along, the kids play together and there's plenty to go around."
