The Longview 4H Beef Club got a lot beefier this year.
Mentor to the club, Ross Lewis, said the club doubled in size this year to 28, and that means 28 steers will be auctioned off this Victoria Day Monday.
"We're going to start at 1 o'clock on Monday, May 19th, with our show. You can come down and see some pretty good heifers, some cow-calf pairs, and then we'll roll into our steer show and crown the champion out of there on their showmanship and grooming. Then we're going to have a pretty real good brisket supper by JRRR's BBQ at 5 o'clock, then we're going to roll right into a cattle sale starting at 6, and we're going to lead it off with our donation steer. We're going to sell him and then see where it goes from there. Usually, most years, we sell him twice, and we're able to write the Hospital Foundation a pretty big cheque."
Last year's donation steer raised over $34,000 for the High River District Health Care Foundation.
There's also a little fun bet going on with the kids and Ross, where if the club can raise $60,000 this year, they get to dye Ross' hair any colour they want. 4H club member Bray Sutherland is hoping they can do it so they can dye his hair pink.
