The Completely Branded RentPro Weyburn Razorbacks were in tough Wednesday night at the Tom Zandee Sports Arena. The Razorbacks would drop their third game in a row, falling 18-4 to the Saskatoon SWAT.
The visiting SWAT dominated from the opening whistle, scoring six goals in the first period, eight in the second, and four more in the third. Weyburn responded with a single goal in the opening frame and three in the second, but couldn’t find the back of the net in the third period.
Jack Missal scored twice for the Razorbacks, while Ryder Hignett and Nash Hignett also tallied. Despite the offensive efforts, the SWAT outshot Weyburn 48-23 and controlled much of the game. James Mahussier led the way for Saskatoon with six goals, and Andy Gao added five.
Following the loss, head coach Kyle Bellegay didn’t mince words about the performance.
“We just lacked heart,” Bellegay said. “We had to really buckle down. Comes down to heart and compete, and we’re just not at that level where we’re competing for a full 60 minutes.”
Penalties played a role in the Razorbacks’ struggles, as the Razorbacks took nine minor penalties, leading to five power play goals for Saskatoon.
“I just think we were getting stuck in the box so much that our guys are getting tired,” Bellegay explained. “Our penalty kill is still one of our strong suits. Power play needs to chip in a little more, but we just have to be more disciplined.”
The Razorbacks now sit at 1-3 on the season and have a short break before returning to action on May 24th.
“We need to get back to fundamentals and just really understanding the logistics of why we’re doing things on the floor,” Bellegay said of the team’s focus during the off week. “Kind of slowing down and have a little more patience from both ends of the floor.”
He also acknowledged that the disparity in shot totals has been a growing concern.
“We definitely have to shoot more and we have to shore up more defensively,” he noted. “Like we’re giving up 50 plus shots a game, and if it wasn’t for our goalies, it would be a higher outcome than that.”
The Razorbacks will look to regroup and bring a stronger effort to the floor when they meet the Predators in Prince Albert.
