With its historical sites and tidy appearance, Miami could be a destination for any discerning visitor.

While it might be a bit more common to see a billboard advertising this pleasant village in Manitoba, how about Alberta?

That’s just where one was spotted.

A connection to home

Brian Callum, the reeve for the RM of Thompson, was surprised to learn about the billboard.

“I had no idea that the sign existed or what the purpose of the sign was, but anything that mentions Miami, Manitoba is a plus for us, so I definitely wanted to have a look,” he says.

Callum says that the billboard he visited was in the northeast part of Calgary. He hears there’s one in Edmonton, too.

“We were [in Calgary] on the weekend visiting friends, and their son ... who used to live in Plum Coulee, noticed this sign and told me about it,” he says.

Callum says that since he is reeve of the RM Thompson, which includes the village of Miami, he found it “appropriate” to take a picture of the sign with his wife, Barb.

According to Callum, the motivation for the picture was to create “a little press or publicity in regards to visiting Miami.”

A Petro Canada sign

Callum says the billboard was put up by Petro Canada, which has a location in the Manitoba village.

He’s not sure what exactly the story is with the sign, but he appreciates it, nonetheless.

“It was a nice surprise, and anytime you can get the name of your town out there, it's great for your community,” he says.
