Severe thunderstorm warnings in southern Manitoba began to pop up on Thursday afternoon.
These storms are often fast-moving and capable of producing very strong wind gusts, large hail, and heavy rain, Environment Canada says.
Just after 2 p.m., the national forecaster sent out a warning for a storm east of Winnipeg. Environment Canada said it was a fast-moving storm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, toonie-sized hail, and heavy rainfall.
Parts of northeast Winnipeg were included in the warning, as was the R.M. of Springfield, including Anola and Birds Hill Provincial Park.
Since then several other warnings have come and gone throughout the Red River Valley.
Officials warn that driving conditions may quickly become hazardous due to reduced visibility, pooling water, and the risk of hail damage in these storms.
Environment Canada is urging residents to take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches. If you're outdoors, find shelter and protect yourself from hail and flying debris.
Severe thunderstorms can also generate tornadoes, adding to the potential danger, Environment Canada warns. Some Manitoba meteorologists have said that the possibility of tornadoes does appear to be increasing for parts of southern Manitoba this afternoon.
A severe thunderstorm warning is issued when a storm is either imminent or occurring and is expected to produce damaging hail, wind, or rain.
