Cochrane RCMP are asking local high school students to stay safe and follow the rules as the “Senior Assassin” water gun game continues to grow in popularity among graduating students.

While the game, which involves students attempting to "eliminate" each other with water guns, has raised concern in other parts of Canada, such as Ontario, Cochrane RCMP say it has not caused significant issues locally.

“We’ve only received one call for service related to the game in Cochrane,” said Const. Clayton Gelinas. “It hasn’t been a problem here, and we really appreciate the students for following the rules so far.”

RCMP are reminding participants to be mindful of how the game can be perceived, especially when using toy weapons in public.

“One of the key things is not spray painting the water guns all black. That can lead to them being misinterpreted as real firearms,” Gelinas warned. “And if students are going to someone’s house, they need to be sure it’s the right address, and not enter without permission.”

Gelinas also emphasized that while the game is meant to be fun, it should not cause alarm or lead to misunderstandings that require police involvement.

The reminder echoes concerns shared by Calgary Police earlier this week. In a statement, CPS noted the potential for safety issues and public confusion when games like Senior Assassin are played in residential areas or involve realistic-looking weapons.

Police services in Ontario have also issued similar warnings after incidents of mistaken identity and trespassing during the game.

In Cochrane, officers are hopeful students will continue to enjoy the tradition safely.

“We’re glad to see local schools and students being responsible,” said Gelinas. “We just ask that everyone keeps safety, and common sense in mind.”
