JUNO-nominated Winnipeg-based artist Don Amero has built his career on honesty, heart, and the power of storytelling. In his latest collection of songs, Amero shares deeply personal stories—of grief, faith, fatherhood, and the search for peace in a noisy world.
One of the most powerful songs on his Heart EP was inspired by a conversation with a young girl grieving the loss of her father. “She looked up at me with tears in her eyes and said, ‘I don’t have a dad,’” Amero shares. “It hit me hard. That one moment became the heartbeat of the song.” The track explores loss not just from a child's view, but from anyone who's experienced that aching absence.
Amero also reflects on his own spiritual journey. “I grew up in church, but it felt like there wasn’t space to wrestle with faith,” he explains. “Now I realize asking questions isn’t wrong—it’s how we stay connected.” His lyrics in I Just Want to Talk express a raw desire to hear from God in the midst of uncertainty. “Sometimes I feel lost,” he admits. “But I believe stillness is where we start to hear again.”
Parenthood is another thread woven through his work. As a father, Amero sees parallels between his own longing for connection with his kids and our human desire to feel close to something greater. “I don’t want my kids to feel obligated to spend time with me. I want them to come because they want to. I think God feels the same way.”
Now working on a new EP titled Soul, Amero describes the sound as “Chris Stapleton meets John Legend”—rootsy, soulful, and full of heart.

Heart and Soul: A new musical direction
Looking ahead, Amero revealed that his current musical project will consist of three EPs, totaling 18 songs. The first EP, Heart, is already available, with Soul next in line.
Amero is collaborating with Toronto-based producer Doug Romano and songwriter Liz Rodrigues, who has written for artists such as Eminem and John Legend.
"She's fantastic... an incredible artist in her own right. I got to hear her sing a couple months ago, and I was blown away. And I said, hey, can we do some writing?"
The collaboration may even cross genre boundaries.
"Maybe a rapper. Who knows," he adds.
Through it all, Amero’s heart remains rooted in telling honest, vulnerable stories that invite listeners to reflect—and just be.
