Residents are invited to bring their shovels and spades to participate in the 27th Branches & Banks community tree planting of the Cochrane Environmental Action Committee in partnership with the town.

This year it's being held in Mitford Park starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 24th.

CEAC president Tim Giese says the town has prepped the area in advance to help enhance its success.

The area has been mowed, and both topsoil and hemp pads will be added before the planting begins.

"The hemp pads will keep the grass from trying to push up into the dirt and choke out all the trees."

Another layer of topsoil will be added afterward by the town.

"It should be a lot easier to plant trees than it has ever been in all the 26 years that we have been planting trees," he said.

In total, 1,800 trees native to the area will be planted. On May 23, Garmin employees and school students will begin the two-day planting. Giese estimates they'll be planting 1,000 of the trees.

Be sure to dress for the weather as the event goes ahead rain or shine. Bring gloves, shovels and spades for planting. Garden buckets are also great to assist with spreading mulch and watering the newly planted trees. And don't forget to bring along your water bottle.

Participants can park in the Mitford Park parking lot and walk up the trail next to the Paul Daniels Stage to the site.

Coincidently, most of the trees you'll pass on the southside of the path were planted through the branches and banks program 10 to 15 years ago, pointed out Giese.

People are asked to register in advance so there will be enough snacks on hand for participants.
