It may have been cool outside, but limited sunshine, casting lines, and community spirit set the stage as Sportsman’s Corner Campground hosted its 2025 Silver Bass Fishing Derby on May 17–18, blending outdoor fun with fundraising for Make-A-Wish Canada.

The weekend event crowned Damian Lebrun as champion with a 72cm silver bass, kickstarting a summer camping season brimming with optimism.

A legacy of wishes and wins

Now in its 15th year under campground owner Donna Olson’s stewardship, the derby has directed proceeds to Make-A-Wish Canada since 2010.

“We’ve been focusing our donation for the derby on Make-A-Wish Canada since we took over,” Olson says.

The event has contributed $58,688 to the charity to date.

This year’s turnout saw 42 registrants, slightly fewer than 2024 but still a cause to celebrate, with Olson adding, “We consider that a successful time."

Lebrun lands a great catch

Lebrun’s silver bass took home the first prize, with two others at 63.5cm and 61.5cm securing second and third places.

The victory came during a “guys' weekend” for a group of campers.

“He was pretty proud of his big silver bass,” Olson notes.

When asked about the fish’s size, she adds, “It was about 28½ inches, so it put a lot of smiles on the boaters’ faces.” Lebrun noted the fish was a personal best for him.

Optimism anchors the camping season

Despite some cancellations due to weather concerns, the derby’s lively atmosphere set a hopeful tone.

“We’re always optimistic for a great camping season because when they’re coming camping, they’re just out to have a good time,” Olson says.

The campground now looks ahead to its larger September derby, featuring auction prizes to further boost donations.

As tents and laughter fill the grounds, Sportsman’s Corner continues to cast a line between outdoor adventure and heartfelt generosity.
