A new summer camp may be coming to Lacombe.
The Central Alberta Immigrant Women’s Association (CAIWA) is looking to launch a six-week camp to support newcomers and their families.
CAIWA has hosted previous camps in Red Deer over the past 10 years, according to Tabitha Phiri, the program co-ordinator for domestic violence and self-harm.
Last summer, a camp was held in Rimbey, but CAIWA hopes to expand into Lacombe.
“Lacombe is apart from Red Deer. It's also a large city, and we have a lot of immigrant families now in Lacombe,” said Phiri.
The end of the six-week camp would include a special event for parents.
In addition to camps, CAIWA hosts an annual information event providing essential details to newcomers, such as legal resources and guidance on helping family members immigrate.
The last session drew about 70 attendees, many of whom were especially engaged by an anti-bullying presentation led by Sgt. Hubbard. The talk also covered ways to protect against physical and emotional abuse.
The next information session is planned for September.
