We are in the midst of the Seed and Feed promotion here at Golden West, where we bring meals out to lucky farm crews while they continue to work on seeding. It's a small thing that we can do here at the station to feed the people that put food on our tables. But there is one thing that, whether it be a meal delivery, or travelling to a location outside of town for any other purpose, always stays true and is a necessity when driving: the wave.
If you're unsure of what I'm referring to, my initial guess is you aren't from a small community or haven't done much/any travelling to rural locations in Saskatchewan. The 'small town wave' is simple; when driving on any rural road, when you pass someone, you wave. Not a full blown side to side over excited wave, but 2 fingers up off the steering wheel, occasionally accompanied with a head nod as well. It isn't law that this is required in Saskatchewan, but it should be.
Many years ago, I was travelling to some smaller communities over the summer for a promotion we were doing, and my co-worker was along with me whom was originally from Calgary. The waving to everyone you see on rural roads concept was foreign to her, and it took a while before it caught on.
For anyone from a smaller community, you don't have to think about it. It's just like breathing. You just do it. Instinctively, by habit or unknowingly. It just happens, because that's just what you do. So the next time you're traveling out of town, and driving on a rural road, if it already doesn't come naturally to you, give a wave to any vehicle you pass. It'll make your day, even though you don't know it yet.
