Students, families, and supporters will gather at St. John's Ravenscourt School on Thursday afternoon to honour an alumna and the legacy she created.
In 2006, Kendra McBain was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer called alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma.
While undergoing treatment, Kendra organized the inaugural Kendra's Walk fundraiser, raising $160,000 in its first year, enough to build a teenager's room at CancerCare Manitoba. The remaining funds were put into a trust fund that continues to raise money in support of cancer research and other needs for teens living with cancer.
Kendra fought with every ounce of energy she had to defeat cancer. However, in December 2009, at the age of 18, Kendra passed away.
Her family has continued Kendra's Walk each year since with this years walk slated to take place on Thursday, May 22 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Ravenscourt School.
"We encourage everyone to participate by taking time to walk on this day," said her family in a press release. "This part of Kendra’s Walk, called Kilometres for Kendra, was established with the goal of having all teens in Manitoba walking for cancer awareness, on the same day. In the same fashion, we invite all Winnipeggers to gather, walk and raise awareness and funds for cancer research, at any place and any time on Thursday, May 22. Every step makes a difference, so please put on your walking shoes, dress in purple and take a walk."
Since the inception of Kendra's Walk, over $1,000,000 has been raised in support of teens living with cancer.
