A new school-based lacrosse program is taking root in Portage la Prairie, with a special event set for June 20 to celebrate the sport and its Indigenous roots.
Led by La Verendrye School Vice Principal Al Patterson, the initiative is designed to introduce younger students to Canada’s national summer sport.
"We've decided that since the high school program has been around for a number of years, it would be good to get some of the Grade 7 and 8's, learning a bit about the game," said Patterson.
June 20 was intentionally selected for Lacrosse Day because it aligns with National Indigenous Peoples Day.
"Lacrosse was created by the First Nations. We thought this day would be a great opportunity to showcase what our kids are learning and to recognize the cultural significance of the sport."
The Lacrosse Day event will be held at Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI), chosen for its central location and quality field facilities. Students from schools across the division will be bussed in to participate in drills and games showcasing the skills they've developed.
Patterson, who has worked with the Manitoba Lacrosse Association and coach Don Jacks, said the program builds on earlier efforts in the community.
"A number of years ago, Graham Schindle and I started a summer lacrosse program. It faded out, but now we're now trying to reignite that passion in the younger grades."
The initiative also aims to offer students a wider variety of sporting options beyond the region's more dominant sports.
"Portage is big on hockey, baseball, and soccer town. But there’s nothing wrong with adding another sport. Lacrosse has a lot of transferable skills, especially with hockey, and it appeals to many students."
The program may have even broader impacts. As Patterson prepares to take on the role of principal at La Verendrye School this fall, he hopes the program could enhance student engagement.
"Maybe this lacrosse program will bring some of those kids in and change some attendance and academic outcomes for them."
