The Saskatchewan Health Authority is calling on Estevan residents to step forward and support the local Meals on Wheels program, which is in urgent need of volunteers.
Deborah Augey, Volunteer Coordinator with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, joined the SUN 102 Morning Show to share how Estevan residents can get involved with the Meals on Wheels program — and how meaningful the experience can be not just for recipients, but for volunteers as well.
“People feel good by doing good. It warms our hearts — both the recipients and our own.”
The program offers more than just food. For many recipients, it’s a rare moment of human connection.
“That is so important, especially for people who are quite isolated in their homes,” Augey said. “Our Meals on Wheels volunteers are able to provide a little bit of that community connection — that personal connection — when they drop off the meal for our clients.”
Volunteers pick up meals at St. Joseph’s Hospital at 11:15 a.m. and deliver them along one of two city routes. Deliveries take place Monday through Friday, but volunteers can choose how often they help.
“They do not have to deliver every day — we take people according to what availability they have,” Augey said.
“Volunteers get involved because they want to do good for their community. They want to help — especially those who may not be as independent as they are.”
