The Town of Okotoks recognized the dedication of the Public Works department during the Annual Equipment Showcase on Thursday, May 22.

During the event, equipment was on display at the Operations Centre, such as a Mini Loader, Mini Excavator, Hook Lift Truck, Bobcat, Loader, and Grader, in celebration of National Public Works Week.

It's important for the town to recognize National Public Works Week, as it can be a service that is overlooked when things are running properly.

“This is a chance to showcase what we do, and how public works helps everybody in their everyday lives, whether it's making sure you have clean drinking water, safe roads to drive on, garbage collection, or looking after the pool and soccer fields,” said Peter McDowell, Okotoks Transportation Team Leader. “It's how we help our community enjoy the community.”

The Equipment Showcase has continued to grow every year with more equipment on display and activities for youth at the event.

“It's all about the kids, letting them touch the trucks and see how we look after the roads, collect the garbage, and look after the soccer fields,” McDowell said. “It's a fun way to engage the public and teach them about Public Works.”

McDowell has been in Public Works for over 23 years, with the last nine spent in Okotoks.

“The equipment was a big draw, but getting to help look after the community you live in is a good feeling," he said.
