The Soo Line Historical Museum and Weyburn & Area Heritage Village officially opened their doors for the 2025 season this week. The two popular attractions allow the public to explore Weyburn’s unique history and prairie roots. This year, visitors will also be able to do it with free admission throughout the summer.

Both heritage sites began welcoming visitors on Tuesday.

“We’re really excited that on opening day, over 20 people walked through the Soo Line Historical Museum,” said Paige Tenbult, communications coordinator for the City of Weyburn. “The weather wasn’t fantastic, and with the Heritage Village being a very much outdoor facility, we didn’t have as many visitors there, but we know as the season warms up… we’re just really looking forward to more people being able to access our lovely historical museums.”

Thanks to sponsorship from Sask Lotteries and Vermilion Energy, admission for all walk-in visitors and school tours will be free for the entire 2025 season.

“This sponsorship does really help just ensure that access to the local history remains barrier-free and supports community education and tourism,” Tenbult explained.

Amanda Wallace, Leisure Services Manager with the City of Weyburn, echoed the sentiment in a written statement.

“We are so grateful to our sponsors for making it possible for everyone in the community to explore our history without financial constraints. These spaces celebrate our local story, and we want everyone to be part of it.”

Both museums will be staffed with seasonal coordinators, including returning employees and those with a background in history. Visitors can expect knowledgeable guidance during their tours, with potential changes coming to the Soo Line Historical Museum displays as the season progresses.

While admission is free, donations are encouraged to help support ongoing programming and facility upkeep. Visitors who donate at least $1 will also receive exclusive perks from participating local businesses. Discount cards are available on-site at each museum and can be presented at participating businesses to redeem the offers.

The Soo Line Historical Museum and the Weyburn & Area Heritage Village are open seasonally from May through September. You can find the hours of operation for both on the City of Weyburn website
