Mounties are warning property owners in a neighbouring county near Airdrie to take precautions after a recent rise in copper thefts from irrigation systems.

Wheatland County — located southeast of Airdrie — has experienced an increase in break-ins and copper thefts from farm pivots, according to a RAVE alert circulated by the RCMP.

Police say suspects have been damaging irrigation systems and stripping copper wiring from inside them.

Landowners are being urged to lock gates, secure entrances, ensure outdoor lighting is functional, and verify that any surveillance systems are working properly.

Residents are advised not to confront suspicious individuals or vehicles and to report any unusual activity to police.

The information was shared through a RAVE alert — a mobile safety system used by the RCMP to distribute crime prevention tips and public safety messaging.

Crimes in progress should be reported to 9-1-1, referencing the RAVE alert. For non-emergencies, residents can call 1-833-547-RAVE.

Anonymous tips can also be submitted through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS or online at www.P3Tips.com.
