More than 70 commercial vehicles were inspected near Lake Louise during a three-day roadside enforcement blitz last week, with 20 ordered out of service and 12 identified as requiring immediate attention, RCMP say.

The inspection operation ran from May 15 to 17 and involved Lake Louise RCMP, Banff RCMP, Alberta RCMP Traffic Services, Alberta Sheriffs, Alberta Transportation, and Parks Canada.

According to an RCMP news release, the joint effort aimed to ensure commercial vehicles were operating safely and complied with both provincial and federal legislation.

Of the 70-plus vehicles examined, 38 passed inspections. Another 12 were identified as "requiring immediate attention."

Officers issued 31 tickets and handed out 19 warning tickets.

"Traffic safety is a priority for Lake Louise RCMP," said Sergeant Susan Richter, the detachment commander. "In this operation, we aimed to enhance public safety by focusing on three things — safe vehicles, safe drivers, and safe roads."

"This initiative was one way we have used education and enforcement to ensure our roadways are safe for everyone using them," she added. "I am very appreciative of the assistance provided by the Alberta Sheriffs and Parks Canada."

Alberta Sheriffs provided several officers to assist with the operation, including specially trained commercial vehicle inspectors.
