A powerful documentary exploring the shared experiences of newcomers and Indigenous peoples will be featured at a public event on May 29, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Humboldt and District Gallery. The screening of Common Territory is hosted by Connecting Grids Regional Immigration Partnership (CGRIP) in collaboration with the Humboldt Regional Newcomer Centre, Horizon School Division’s Indigenous Education Team, and the Humboldt and District Gallery.
Produced by the Chilliwack Local Immigration Partnership in collaboration with Bear Image Productions—an Indigenous filmmaker from the Ch’íyáqtel First Nation—Common Territory presents compelling narratives of displacement, belonging, and cultural preservation. The film focuses on life within the traditional territories of the Stó:lō peoples, also known as the Fraser Valley, through personal interviews with both Indigenous peoples and newcomers.
Since its initial release in October 2023, with screenings in Chilliwack, Agassiz, and Hope, Common Territory has garnered wide acclaim for its honest portrayal of community experiences and its commitment to cultural integrity. The project involved active participation from newcomer communities to ensure a portrayal that is both respectful and culturally sensitive.
The Humboldt event will conclude with a sharing circle featuring Indigenous elders and newcomers from the Humboldt region. This open dialogue aims to foster mutual understanding and connection through the exchange of lived experiences.
The initiative aligns with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action #93 and #94, which emphasize the need for cultural education and collaboration between Indigenous peoples and newcomers to Canada.
The event is free to attend and open to the public. Organizers encourage community members to participate in this meaningful opportunity for reflection, education, and cross-cultural connection.
