Over 300 people have been evacuated from Pimicikamak Cree Nation as a wildfire approaches near the northern Manitoba community.

As a precaution, 216 people were evacuated to Winnipeg and 86 to Thompson on Saturday.

55 firefighters have worked around the clock battling the blaze, and as of Sunday, Chief David Monais said the fire was considered stable. However, according to the province's fire status report, the fire continues to burn out of control, reaching 1,500 hectares.

Chief Monias says helicopters monitored the area late Sunday and identified no immediate threats.

"Crews are 'fanning' the fire to monitor the risk of ember transfer due to increased winds," said Chief Monias. "No Firefighting resources are being removed from the area, and a hotspot scan is scheduled for Monday to provide updated fire activity."

The biggest concern as of now, according to Chief Monias, is smoke.

"Smoke has now reached the Cross Lake area," said Chief Monias. " This situation is being closely monitored due to potential health impacts."

The community will receive more detailed fire activity information after a hotspot scan is completed later today. Chief Monias says they are monitoring the situation closely and are taking all necessary steps to protect their people.
