Construction of the new Weyburn General Hospital has reached a major milestone, with the project now 75 per cent complete. The update comes nearly two years after shovels first hit the ground in June 2023 and marks steady progress toward the long-awaited facility becoming a reality.
The hospital’s exterior is now finished, and work has shifted fully to the interior, where crews are installing drywall, painting, and laying flooring. Concrete work and paving for the parking lot are scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.
"We are pleased to announce 75 per cent completion of the Weyburn General Hospital," said SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister David Marit. "This achievement is the result of the collective dedication and collaboration of all stakeholders working on this project. We are committed to supporting the enhancement of health care services in the Weyburn community and surrounding areas."
The project has been years in the making. Initial funding was announced by the provincial government in March 2015. The site, located in Weyburn’s northeast, was confirmed in September 2020. The design phase began in 2021, leading to construction in mid-2023.
Once complete, the new facility will feature 35 beds, including 25 for acute care and 10 for inpatient mental health services. The hospital will also include emergency medical services, ambulatory care, allied health services, social work, and office space for the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation, all under one roof. A heliport will also be built to support emergency medical transport.
"I am delighted to see the great progress made on the new Weyburn General Hospital, and soon, area residents will have access to more health services in one convenient location," said Rural and Remote Health Minister Lori Carr. "I appreciate the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation and the community for their fundraising efforts and continued support as we see this project through to completion."
Weyburn-Bengough MLA Mike Weger echoed those sentiments. “Once the Weyburn Hospital is complete, residents will have access to a fully modern hospital with improved patient safety, such as purpose-built mental health inpatient beds and single patient rooms.”
Derek Miller, Chief Operating Officer of the Saskatchewan Health Authority, added that the new facility will allow healthcare teams to deliver “safe, high-quality care” with expanded services close to home.
The $120-million project is being funded by the Government of Saskatchewan, with additional costs for equipment and furnishings covered by the community and the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation.
“Thanks to the generosity of our donors and the dedication of the Foundation Board, what was once a vision is rapidly becoming a reality,” said Foundation Chair Jeff Hayward. “We are closer than ever to delivering the high-quality care our region deserves.”
Wright Construction, the company overseeing the build, thanked the local community for their support and highlighted the collaboration with SaskBuilds and trade partners as key to reaching this point.
The new Weyburn General Hospital is expected to open in 2026.
