A male is facing a lengthy list of charges after running from police following a traffic stop.

On May 23, shortly before 6 p.m., Central Division General Patrol officers conducted a traffic stop in the 500 block of Spence Street where a male cyclist was disobeying the Highway Traffic Act. While officers were speaking to the male, an edged weapon was seen sticking out of his pocket. He was immediately arrested. While officers were taking him to the cruiser car, the male ran down the street after breaking free.

Officers chased the male and saw him enter an intersection where a moving vehicle grazed him. The male stumbled but did not fall. He continued to run in and out of traffic when an officer deployed a conducted energy weapon to safely apprehend and prevent him from serious injury.

The male fell to the ground and hit his chin. Officers quickly applied first aid. He was taken to the hospital and treated for a laceration and two hairline fractures to his lower jaw.

He now faces 15 charges related to weapons after officers saw he was in possession of tools and weapons, including bear spray.

Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the investigation.
