Airdrie fire crews responded to a house fire in Midtown around 8:45 a.m. Monday, according to Fire Chief Mike Pirie.

An investigation by the department’s Fire Prevention Bureau placed the estimated damage to the structure and contents at $140,000.

All occupants had evacuated before crews arrived, and no injuries were reported.

"On arrival, fire crews found smoke coming from an upstairs bedroom window of a two-storey, residential home," Pirie noted in a social media post. "The resident had initially attempted to extinguish the mattress fire with a portable fire extinguisher before leaving the home. Firefighters entered the structure to ensure that the blaze had been completely extinguished and initiated ventilation due to heavy smoke conditions."

Pirie reminded residents to check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly, keep a portable fire extinguisher accessible, and build and practise a family home escape plan that includes pets.
