A city councillor is hoping to hear more about how GFL services the city, as Brian Johnson made a comment about getting a report on some of their activities to better understand the service. Johnson made that comment while the city was looking over GFL's cart report for April 2025.
He says the report would help clarify how the recycling service functions in the Estevan area.
"I'm just concerned about how the process is, where they're handling the recycling, and is it still going to be over at GFL, or is it at another site, or how is it that they separate their products that they receive? Is the plastic recycled separately? Is the white paper and cardboard that's separate?"
In the end, Johnson hopes that more info will give the city a good outlook on what areas they're doing well in and others they could possibly see improve.
That was partially spurred by a new recycling facility, which will be opening soon in Estevan.
"Especially now, when we're looking at having a new facility opening up over right beside GFL there, Sarcan is going to be opening up soon, what are they going to be taking in? So there's going to be more discussion on that, there's going to be more information shared in the community about maybe other products that can be recycled for us."
That could also lead to new recycling avenues for Estevan residents if those options are looked at.
"This is good for people. I'd like to see what we can do with recycling, maybe for oils and solvents and things like that and products that might be more hazardous to the environment that we see and we're using, and we want to look for a place to have them disposed."
Johnson hopes that they'll be able to share any reports they receive from GFL with the public.
"It's going to come to City Council, hopefully they're going to share it with us, right? Because I was on City Council when we brought in these blue bins and garbage bins, and I understand that they were at schools, even at one time, recycling all the paper and waste there."
Johnson says they'll also look at what other cities are doing to keep on top of recycling in their communities.
