A local group of nurses came together to commemorate the end of nursing week this past Saturday.

Nursing Week occurred this year the week of May 12-18. Nursing Week came about from celebrating the birthday, May 12, of Florence Nightingale, who is regarded as the pioneer of modern nursing.

“A simple appreciation makes our work lighter,” remarked Melissa, a nurse, about the importance of acknowledging nurses and nursing week.

Throughout the day, sentiments of selflessness and a desire to help people were echoed as the reason of choosing the nursing profession by several nurses.

“Being a nurse is an honour” said Deanna a nurse of 8 years.

Moji, a nurse of 27 years who has always known she wanted to pursue a career in nursing, talked about why people should have a passion and heart for the job.

"Sometimes you take the burden home."  She emphasized the need for compassion and empathy when providing care.

The attendees reflected on the great challenges and even greater rewards that come with the profession.

"In their most challenging times that they are sick, you're able to comfort and advocate for them." - said Jess, an organizer of the festivities, about patients.

Several attendees also had words of advice to give to the younger generation of nurses.

"It's going to be worth it " says Hansy, the host of the celebration, about beginning the journey of nursing.

This nursing week celebration captured the heart of nurses and the reason they continue to choose their profession.
