If you have a desire to brighten up Winkler with the best looking flower beds and public garden spaces around, then this volunteer opportunity is for you.
"Our community is gorgeous, and we have tremendous staff that do a great job to try to beautify our community," shared Mayor Henry Siemens. "We have contractors who keep our grass mowed nice and close, but we also have a number of absolutely gorgeous plots of flowers throughout the city in different areas. Every year we ask for volunteers to help us keep them looking fantastic through our Adopt-a-Plot campaign."
The ask is really simple. If you have an interest in gardening or experience working with flowers, and love to be outside, the City wants to hear from you. You can volunteer by calling the Community Services Office at 204-325-8333, or e-mailing recreation@cityofwinkler.ca .
Tip and Toss that standing water
Meanwhile, with the recent rains and warmer temperatures, it won't be long before our pesky friend the mosquito shows up for another season.
"There is some standing water still, so we know those pesky little critters are going to come," offered Siemens with a chuckle. "We can try to mitigate that as much as possible through a program we like to call Tip and Toss. Don't let freshwater stand around too long. If it's been standing for a bit, dump it, just to make sure we don't give these mosquitoes any opportunity to gain traction."
