A group of adults in downtown Weyburn after midnight on Saturday, May 24th, was brought to the attention of the Weyburn Police Service.
"We were made aware of a group that was walking in the downtown area, and when our members interacted with them, one of the male adults was found to be in possession of open alcohol. He was issued a ticket under AGRA [the Alcohol and Gaming Regulations Act] for having open liquor in public," said Sergeant Riley Ross.
Later that night, the WPS saw the man again after he had been reported causing a disturbance by yelling in public.
"We ended up dealing with that same individual who was causing a disturbance in a public area, and was found to be highly intoxicated."
Due to his intoxicated state and the absence of a responsible party, the man was arrested for public intoxication and was held in cells until sober.
"At that time of day, there was the potential that they were going to wake somebody or just cause a disturbance to the public," explained Ross. "We also had concerns about the safety for them, because of their level of intoxication. So at that point, we made the arrests for public intoxication and held them until they were sober and it was safe for them to be on their own."
He advised anyone who witnesses these kinds of things to call the police.
"Anytime somebody's yelling, out in public, that's not normal practice for people. So if anyone ever does see somebody out in a public area yelling for no specific reason, give the police a call and we'll investigate and determine what's going on with that individual, whether it's that they're intoxicated or having some sort of mental health problem."
The WPS responded to 12 calls related to mental health and well-being last week, with four individuals transported to the hospital for further care and evaluation.
