Conservative MP Branden Leslie has officially been sworn in for his second term as the Member of Parliament for Portage-Lisgar, marking the beginning of another chapter in his political journey. Following the ceremony, Leslie described the experience as 'humbling' and said he remains "proud to be our voice in Parliament."
After a lengthy break, Leslie said he was eager to return to the House of Commons and begin working on the priorities he campaigned on.
"My job, unfortunately, as a member of the opposition, is to hold this government to account," he said. "We're going to be focusing on core issues that reduce the cost of living, drive down costs, and increase the growth of our economy."
Leslie criticized the federal government's delay in presenting a budget, calling it 'very disappointing,' and emphasized the need for policies that 'unleash the private sector' and reduce 'burdensome government bureaucracy.' He also cited the rise in crime across Portage and other communities as a top concern.
"From securing our border from guns and drugs to locking up violent and repeat offenders, we have a lot of work to do to make our communities safe again."
On the recent change in leadership, Leslie noted that new Prime Minister Mark Carney has shown signs of adopting conservative policies.
"We've seen a lot of plagiarism, frankly, of good conservative ideas. I want them to succeed because I want Canadians to succeed."
Leslie also weighed in on the political landscape in Manitoba, expressing optimism about new Progressive Conservative leader Obby Khan.
"It's a good time for rejuvenation," he said. "I think he is going to do a good job and hopefully unite the party and Manitobans toward a more conservative approach to government."
When asked about the New Democratic Party's poor performance in the election, Leslie said, "They supported the Trudeau Liberal government for many years, and I think they paid the price for that."
Looking ahead, Leslie said his motivation remains deeply personal.
"My daughter, that's why we do this," he said. "It's about the next generation, the restoration of the promise of Canada, which is, if you work hard, play by the rules, and pay your taxes, you can improve the quality of life for your family."
With his family by his side during the swearing-in ceremony, Leslie said their support remains central to his mission.
"My wife is my rock. The focus must always remain on the future."
