The Louis Riel Arts and Technology Centre raised thousands of dollars at an event held earlier this month in honour of those battling cancer.

It was all part of their 14th annual Cure-a-thon, where students and staff offered salon services, hosted a bake sale and pizza lunch, ran a car wash, organized games in the gym and held a silent auction.

“Students are so eager and so excited about this event,” said hair and esthetics instructor Miriam to the Louis Riel School Division. “A lot of our students contribute in other ways too — by donating prizes or bringing their family members in.”

To make this years event even more fun, the schools principal, Darren Baker, got in on the action and in front of a packed gym, the day after the event, he had his head and beard shaved off live on camera.

“It’s been wonderful," said hair and esthetics instructor Vanhphen to the Louis Riel School Division. "Cancer touches a lot of lives, and the students are learning to give back to the community.”

This year's Cure-a-Thon raised a record-breaking $8,001.25, surpassing last year's total of $5,500.
